Frequently Asked Questions

IN A FEW WORDS, WHAT IS KNIGHTS FOR NEIGHBORS (K4N)?

We call it a Catholic-to-Business mutual support organization. You have heard of Business to Business ventures in which companies make commercial transactions with each other. We are Catholics supporting businesses through networking, prayer, and community.

IS K4N JUST FOR CATHOLICS?

No. Anyone can make use of K4N, but we are first and foremost a Catholic enterprise with open hearts and prudential outreach.

WHO BENEFITS FROM K4N?

Knights, their spouses, children, friends and community. This is a worthwhile networking opportunity and an opportunity to promote businesses among friends.

WHAT IMPACT DOES K4N HOPE TO HAVE?

We hope families will have greater means to save money, spend time with children, and support their families and parishes.

IS K4N CONSISTENT WITH THE OVERALL MISSION OF THE KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS?

Yes, K4N is consistent with and complementary to the mission of the Knights of Columbus. We meet a need in accordance with the Knights of Columbus Constitution, in which we

"render pecuniary aid to its members, their families, and beneficiaries of members and their families; render mutual aid and assistance to its sick, disabled, and needy members and their families; promote social and intellectual interaction among its members and their families; promote and conduct educational, charitable, religious, social welfare, war relief, public relief, and other activities; and unite members in their Catholic identity and the practice of their Catholic faith."

Just as first century Christians rallied around each other, Knights for Neighbors can do the same.  Most of our council and other councils are comprised of working men who are just getting by.

We are not prosperity gospel proponents. We are hard-working and want to support our kids and pay the bills.

Caring for one another involves paying attention to our brothers and sisters looking for work, growing a business, and dealing with life's travails.

"We can offer a witness of fraternity to show how all of us as Catholics can do a better job caring for one another and how we can encourage and accompany one another in our parishes."  Carl Anderson, Supreme Knight of Columbus, quoted in September 1, 2017 edition of Columbia.

DOES K4N COMPETE WITH KNIGHTS HELPING NEIGHBORS?

No. Knights Helping Neighbors direct financial assistance to struggling Knights and their families. K4N offers networking opportunities to Knights, families, and friends. The two missions are complementary.

HOW DOES K4N SERVE AS A RECRUITING TOOL FOR the KNIGHTS Of COLUMBUS?

K4N is a positive environment for making contacts, finding work, and learning more about one another, in keeping with the goals of the Knights of Columbus to "render mutual aid and promote social and intellectual interaction among members." Participants have opportunities to share their skills, needs, and leads outside of regular meetings.

These opportunities offer men additional incentives to join a Council and fit in. Thus, we provide a needed resource to attract new and younger members alongside excellent Knights of Columbus programs of the past.

WILL K4N DETRACT AND DISTRACT COUNCILS FROM THEIR SERVICE ORIENTED MISSION?

No. K4N adds another leaf in the book of service, unity, fraternity, and Catholic identity. Although K4N is not currently an official Knights of Columbus Service Program, its aims are wholly consistent with such fine programs.

To wit:"A Knights of Columbus council can work wonders; in fact, with its many programs, it can help change the community, town, city or neighborhood in which you live. However, a successful Knights of Columbus program depends on people taking the initial idea, modifying it to suit specific situations and local needs, then implementing the program in the way it works." We saw a need for improvement in the way we network, interact socially, and "render mutual aid"; this is why we have implemented K4N.

Is it not a great service to help a person find a job or support another family member's talents?

WILL K4N LEAD TO UNHEALTHY COMPETITION, RIVALRY, AND DIVISION?

No. K4N fosters cohesion because friends and neighbors may share who they are and what they do in a friendly atmosphere. Furthermore, K4N is in complete harmony with Catholic social teachings. Can the same be said of Craigslist, Angie's List or The Yellow Pages?

DO OTHER FAITHS ALSO ENGAGE ECONOMICALLY IN A MUTUALLY SUPPORTIVE WAY?

Yes. The Amish, Mormons, Jews, Orthodox, and other faith traditions are keenly aware that mutual economic support and prudent household management are vital for survival and conducive to fraternal cohesion.

K4N adopts the Catholic Church's understanding of "pastoral economy" as an imitation of the divine economy (oikonomia) where the business of heaven becomes the business of business; that is, households and economic engagement have a divine purpose.

WILL A COUNCIL OR ITS MEMBERS Incur LIABILITY for k4N?

No,

  • Any potential liability issues will fall upon the shoulders of the sole proprietor of K4N.
  • Customers who truck, barter, and exchange with any talent or business featured on this website will deal directly with that talent or business.
  • K4N members are known entities and are carefully screened for honesty and integrity before their ads are listed. Usually they are fellow parishioners,
  • It is unlikely that someone from our community will engage in unethical business practices. All members hold to Catholic ethics and desire to provide quality services and products.

what service Oriented organizations does K4N support?

K4N supports veterans (Witness to War Foundation), A Beacon of Hope (a pro-life, pro-parent ministry), and the Lyke House (serving campus ministry at Morehouse, Spelman, Clarke, and GSU), among others. We promote council service events like "Knight-Shift", and council activities supporting the Sisters of Charity, the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers, the Hope House, Habitat for Humanity, the Central Night Shelter, and the St. Thomas More Society.
